Children's Miracle Network is 170 hospitals serving all kids, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

As a member-hospital of Children's Miracle Network, the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children at the University of Mississippi Medical Center works closely with our partners to raise money to help sick children. These "partners" include Newschannel 12 in Jackson, which donates the airtime to broadcast the annual televised fundraiser. Other partners include local and national sponsors, service organizations, the Friends of Children's Hospital and the community at large who "call-in" their support through pledges to the hospital. In 2000, $732,000 was raised for Mississippi's only Children's Hospital.

Children's hospital continues to benefit from the hard work and dedication of its sponsors. Among the largest contributors to Children's Hospital through CMN are Wal-Mart, the Wal-Mart Distribution Center and Sam's Club, Dairy Queen, RE/MAX, Log-a-Load for Kids, McLane Company, Credit Unions for Kids, Heinz, Phi Mu, and Marriott. Children's Miracle Network is a sponsored community service campaign including media initiatives, fundraising and special events which benefit the 170-member Children's Hospitals across the United States and Canada. In partnership with 200 TV stations, 130 radio stations and 100 newspapers, CMN raises approximately $250 million each year for Children's Hospitals. More than 14 million children benefit from the funds raised through Children's Miracle Network.

CMN hospitals treat all kids, suffering from all diseases and injuries including accidents, muscular dystrophy, AIDS, sickle cell anemia, cancer, cystic fibrosis, epilepsy and more.

CMN's guiding principle is that 100 percent of the funds raised by CMN stay in the local community to benefit local children.

Broadcast each year the weekend following Memorial Day, the Children's Miracle Celebration is the world's largest and most popular televised fundraiser. In 2001, it will change from a live broadcast to a pre-produced show filmed in part at Walt Disney World. The ten 30-minute segments will celebrate children's hospitals, provide entertainment, feature dramatic miracle stories and provide recognition for the hundreds of corporate partners that help raise the much needed funds for Children's Miracle Network hospitals.

Other initiatives CMN launched in 2000 include monthly television specials titled Children's Miracle Champions and a daily spot campaign called Children's Miracle Moments. CMN is working closely with their media partners to create a powerful year-round community service campaign, which benefits our most vulnerable citizens, its children.

The Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children and Children's Miracle Network

Major events in Mississippi benefitting the Batson Hospital include the Mal’s St. Paddy’s Parade and Festival, the Southern Farm Bureau Golf Classic, the McLane Southern Golf Tournament and the Trustmark Tour LeFleur. Numerous other events and fund raisers also benefit the hospital or Friends of Children’s Hospital.

The Batson Hospital at UMC is the only hospital in the state devoted exclusively to the care and treatment of sick and injured children. The hospital averages 9,000 admissions a year and more than 80,000 children are treated in its clinics and emergency room. They come from all of Mississippi’s 82 counties.

Most of the hospital’s treatment programs are available nowhere else in Mississippi. The state’s only children’s cancer program, the state’s only comprehensive treatment for cystic fibrosis, and the state’s only epilepsy center are found at UMC.

All of the equipment in the hospital must be scaled down and modified to meet the needs of children. Surgical tools, x-ray machines, IV poles and wheelchairs are all child size. Special services include a school program for children who must be hospitalized for long periods of time.

The 2001 Children's Miracle Celebration broadcast is set for June 2-3. One hundred percent of the proceeds raised through promotional events prior to the broadcast, including those generated by the broadcast itself, go the hospital. If you need more information about the hospital or the Children’s Miracle Network, E-mail the CMN Coordinator or call Public Affairs at the University of Mississippi Medical Center at (601) 984-1100.
